Abstract | This article argues that the systemic approach to the study of translation developed by Itamar Even-Zohar and Gideon Toury can be used to address methodological issues arising from the study of film adaptation as a form of intersemiotic translation. Using the concepts of systems and norms developed by Even-Zohar and Toury as heuristic tools, this article puts forward a systemic model of film adaptation that facilitates contextualization and ideological analysis. A case study is presented to illustrate some of the ways in which this systemic model of film adaptation can be put to use.
